Northview Bank Lends in Cook County
Follow the North Shore Scenic Drive and keep going—when you’re nearing the end of Minnesota, you’ve arrived. Cook County has billed itself as “Way North of Ordinary” and the tagline certainly fits. Populated by artists, naturalists, hippies, resort owners, commercial fishermen, Arctic explorers, and lumberjacks, the cross section of folks you’ll mingle with on your travels in Cook County is anything but vanilla.
Named a Top 100 Adventure Town by National Geographic Adventure Magazine, Grand Marais offers every Northern Minnesota experience you can think of, from skiing to hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and photography. Thick groves of aspen, birch, and maple line the Gunflint Trail, which offers 143 miles of cross-country skiing in winter and great hiking or single track mountain biking in summer. Want to build your own canoe, kayak, or skis the old-fashioned way? Check out the North House Folk School.
Where Lake Superior meets the Sawtooth Mountains, you’ll find Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder. Lutsen is most well-known for its ski slopes on Lutsen Mountains and Tofte has a great upscale hotel in Surfside on Lake Superior. When in Schroeder be sure to check out the Cross River Heritage Center for an intriguing lesson on the history of the North Shore.
And, of course, Cook County is a great jumping off point for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Wilderness (BWCAW), which National Geographic Adventurer called one of the best family outdoor trips.
